789: Celebrating the Hero's Comet!   796: Onban Tojo! Suisei to Yusha no Densetsu!   The Haunted Tourist Trap                 The twerps walk into a ghost story   Blew their chance for a happy ending!   If a Ghost Princess offers you something, take it!

Today finds the twerps and Alexa on another of the Decolore Islands, this one preparing for a celebration. It seems that by a remarkable stroke of plot, the twerps have arrived just in time for a once-in-a-decade sighting of the Conley Comet. This being Pokémon, of course there is a Pokémon-related theme to the sighting - sightings of the comet coincide with gatherings of Pokémon, and that more than anything as mundane as a rare astrological even has Ash REALLY excited!

They arrive at some old ruins at the foot of the mountain, and Alexa explains the island once had a higher population. They make up a meal as the sun sets, and Alexa tells them that historic records show that the island people were attacked by several groups of Pokémon.... what a great place to settle down for a meal! The islanders tried to subdue the Pokémon but the whole island fell into chaos, and things seemed lost. But then a young Pokémon Trainer emerged as the great hero that saved the day. She wants to show them an image of the hero, but when she looks through one of her saddlebags she discovers to her horror it is missing. Flying into a panic, she begins tossing things all over the place, while Helioptile sighs and moves to the other bag and slips the book out. She leafs through the pages of the old book and finds a picture of the hero. He's older, but I'm sure it'll come as no surprise to anybody that he happens to look a lot like, who else, Ash!

The book, one she found during her research, details the story of how the hero - Conley - drew the angry groups of Pokémon up to the top of the mountain where he dramatically gestured just as the comet appeared. The Pokémon were awestruck, while Alexa is more interested in the fact that Conley was apparently aware of the comet despite coming from somewhere over the sea. The anger in the Pokémon’s hearts disappeared and peace was restored to the island, and Conley's fame grew. Soon trainers from all over were traveling there to battle with Conley, and a battle field was constructed on top of the mountain where Conley battled all comers... and allegedly never lost. Conley was named the hero of the island, and the comet named after him in recognition of all he had done.

Listening in from the bushes are Team Rocket, who for once don't see any potential profit for themselves in the twerps' latest interest of the week. Instead, they'll just take advantage of the twerps being preoccupied to take the chance to grab Pikachu for themselves.

Alexa puts on her camera headset, and they prepare to head up to the mountaintop. But just as they're leaving, a soft voice gets their attention. A girl with looooooong pink hair and a voice so soft and quiet that it feels put on approaches, wearing a tiara. She's some kind of bizarre princess or something who apparently hangs out in ruins eavesdropping on children, and she overheard them say they're heading up to the mountaintop. She hands Ash a badge with a star and asks him to take it with him (it's dangerous to go alone!) and tells him she's sure he'll find it useful. With that she drifts off in her strange little drug-addled way, leaving the twerps confused. Alexa is sure she has seen the star-badge before, but laughs it off when the twerps ask for more info and suggests they get going.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket are.... well.... they're dressing up in some giant ghost-type costumes they just happened to have lying around, because why not!?! Jesse is less than enthused with the plan, asking why they need to go through all this, but Meowth insists that it is the best way to do things. James seems far more enthusiastic, noting with happiness that this job requires ACT-ING talents. That seems to get Jesse onboard as well, and they start suiting up - unaware that they're being watched by three Gengar.

Alexa and the twerps continue on up the mountain, having apparently decided that sunset is the perfect time to go mountain climbing. Apparently it's a pretty easy walk though, as they soon arrive at the battlefield ruins without incident, though Pikachu does get an uneasy sense of being watched. They head inside the completely open and unsupervised ruins, since apparently the island is without any sense of health and safety OR tourism potential. Heading down a dark corridor, they're spooked by a flock/swarm of Woobat zipping by. Ash acts all smug and cool about it, telling the others not to be so easily spooked, only to get freaked out when some Venipede come zooming by - humiliated when Iris points out how easily HE was spooked. As Cilan and Alexa hold an adult conversation, Ash and Iris rant away at each other, accusing the other of being the REAL little kid. Iris hits Ash with the worst insult a male can get, telling him he's littler than little, all observed by James in his terrible Gengar outfit. He warns Jesse and Meowth they're coming, and they hide away behind a statue of Conley.

Alexa and the twerps enter the room and begin checking out the statue, Alexa walking the room to film it with her camera when she spots the "ghosts". They lumber forward in their ridiculous outfits and terrify the twerps... but Helioptile most of all, which blasts them with electricity and sends James crashing into the statue. It falls on top of Jesse, who is somehow not liquefied by the fall. In fact she shows her massive strength by physically lifting it over her head in a rage and tossing it aside, complaining that she isn't going to do her own stunts. James and Meowth join in the complaining, till they realise that their disguises have been completely blown, so they figure fuck it and toss away the (terrible) costumes and just go with the old standby.

"Prepare for trouble, it's us!" yells James, stealing the first line
"Can the motto," complains Jesse.
"Don't steal her line!" adds Meowth, outraged.

Ash is equally outraged, but Team Rocket insist that they know the right thing to do is capture Pikachu. They prepare to bring out their Pokémon, but suddenly they glow blue and are lifted high into the air, floating in ineffectual fury. What has caused this? Iris spots some menacing glowing eyes in the darkness, and three Gengar and three Banette appear from down a corridor. Team Rocket demand to be let down and the Pokémon listen, releasing them from Psychic and causing them to crash into the ground. This infuriates them further, Jesse complaining that they flattened her hair, Meowth complaining they flattened his charm and James pointing out the expense of reconstructive dental surgery!

The Ghost Pokémon swoop about Team Rocket and twerp alike, freaking out Helioptile, but Alexa assures it things will be all right and brings out... Noivern! It's a fucking bizarre little dragon thing with big ears that somehow look like giant googly eyes... so it's got that going for it! It uses Dragon Pulse in the direction of the Ghost-Types, almost hitting Meowth and James who rush out of the way at the last second. With the Ghost-Types temporarily incapacitated, Alexa and the twerps get the hell out of there, followed quickly by Team Rocket whose main concern at the moment is not having their souls eaten by Ghosts.

Soon they're all sweating and panting down another corridor, feeling temporarily safe from the Ghosts that could appear from any direction at any time and don't care about walls, roofs or floors! Ash is impressed to discover Alexa has a Noivern, but she sheepishly admits it can be a little fussy. What does that mean? Meowth finds out when it tries to take a bite out of his head! Jesse and James try to haul him out of its mouth but it won't let go, and an apologetic Alexa offers a Spelon Berry to fix things. A grumpy Meowth says this is no time to be offering food... but accepts anyway and gobbles the berry down in a mouthful! Alexa is horrified, the berry was meant for Noivern, and Meowth soon learns why when his mouth explodes with flames and he blasts around against a backdrop of stars and planets, complaining that his mouth is burning down. Cilan notes that Spelon Berries are amongst the spiciest there are, while Alexa gives another to Noivern and calms it down as it enjoys the spice.

She admits that she has to feed it with a Spelon Berry everytime she uses it, otherwise it gets overexcited and tries to bite everybody in sight. With this out of the way, Team Rocket - neither they nor the twerps show no signs of any animosity towards each other - ponder why the Ghost-Types attacked them. Ash admits they seemingly attacked without reason, and Iris notes that the Woobat and Venipede seemed to be fleeing but not aggressive. As they try to figure out the source of the aggression, Alexa suddenly accuses Team Rocket of being to blame, infuriating them as they didn't (deliberately) do anything wrong.... to the Ghost-Types! But the twerps remind them of their treatment of Conley's statue, and if the Pokémon were gathering here on the day the comet comes, they were probably intending to pay homage to Conley who brought their ancestors peace. So the attack on the statue was a huge insult, and has them all riled up now.

The Ghost Types return, coming right for them and blasting them with attacks. Everybody starts running, but find the way forward blocked by two Dusknoir. Ash, Alexa and Meowth turn down one passage, while Iris, Cilan, Jesse and James go down the other. Meowth shouts back to ask where Jesse and James are going and they say they were about to ask him the same thing - if they get out of this alive, they'll see him later! Jesse and James rush past Cilan and Iris unceremoniously, and Iris quickly catches up where she and Jesse exchange catty remarks before degenerating into "You're a kid!" "No YOU'RE a kid!" sniping. Behind them, James and Cilan keep on running, chased by the Banette and complaining that maybe this isn't the time to be bitchy!

Down the other corridor, Ash, Alexa and Meowth are still being chased by the three Gengar, Meowth noting that the Ghost-Types are gaining on them. Ash decides to stand and fight, and has Pikachu blast the hell out of them with Thunderbolt. They crash to the ground, momentarily halted, but now there is a fresh problem - the Dusknoir have gotten ahead of them!

They blast a Shadowball at them, Meowth getting sent crashing right into Ash's face. As he falls, he drops the star-badge to the ground and the Ghost-Types spot it, immediately surrounding it to murmur excitedly. Meowth listens in, translating that this is Conley’s Badge, and maybe that means these trainers aren't the huge dipshits they thought they were! Ash picks the badge back up, amazed to think this might be Conley's Badge, and the Gengars tell them that they're going to take them up to the Battlefield now.

Meanwhile, James and Cilan are doing the heavy lifting as they try to put the Conley statue back in place - Jesse and Iris shouting mixed encouragement/chiding to get on with it and show some oomph. The Banette arrive as the statue is put back in place, and they ask the Pokémon to please forgive them their earlier transgression. The Banette is happy to do so, and Cilan notices a mural on the wall of Conley and the Pokémon following the comet in the sky. The statue is now facing the same direction as the mural, and the wall ahead of them opens up and the statue plinth begins to move. Jesse angrily demands to know where James and Cilan are going, as if this is by their design, and she and Iris leap on to the plinth as well, followed by the Banette.

Up on the mountaintop in the battlefield, Alexa films as Meowth spots the statue come rolling onto the field with the others riding on it. Cilan says that he has solved the "mystery", these Ghost Types are the same ones that Conley calmed down long, long ago. They nod agreement, and Ash explains about how spotting the star calmed the Pokémon down as well. But as they're all enjoying their newfound friendship, Team Rocket reverts to form and grabs Pikachu up into a plastic case with an extendable claw - they're back to baddies! Ash demands to know what they're doing, and they reply with a now complete motto with nobody stealing anybody else's lines!

"The thing we do best, you silly twerp you!"
"Asking dumb things is the best you can do!"
"To protect the world from devastation!"
"To unite all people within our nation!"
"To denounce the evils of truth and love!"
"To extend our reach to the stars above!"
"It's Jesse!"
"And James!"
"Team Rocket hits the jackpot at the speed of light!"
"Surrender now, or prepare for one historic fight!"
"Meowth, dat's right!"

With that they take off, laughing at Ash's insistence that Pikachu is his, mocking his lack of brains (fair enough) and leaping into their Happy Buddha Face Meowth Balloon. The twerps watch in horror, Cilan noting that they're really getting away this time and there is nothing they can do about it since none of them have giant pissed off flying Dragon Pokémon they could immediately call out to save the day or anything! Alexa can't help either, if only they'd introduced this episode that she had a flying Pokémon that liked the idea of taking a bite out of a Meowth-shaped head!

But then shock of shocks... those Ghost-Types save the day! Using Psychic, they haul the balloon back and crash it down into the battlefield. Pikachu's canister falls and shatters and Ash runs to check on him, asking if he is okay. He thanks the Ghost Types for their help, while a pissed off Team Rocket bring out Frillish and Amoonguss to fight the Ghost-Types. Alexa belated remembers she has a Noivern and brings it out, having it use Boom Burst to blast soundwaves from its ears and overpower the two Team Rocket Pokémon’s attacks and blast them backwards. Pikachu follows up with Electro-Ball, and Team Rocket are sent blasting off again, having blown a chance to enjoy a relatively peaceful resolution.

Alexa feeds Noivern another berry, and then a light shines down on them all. The Ghost-Types celebrate with glee and begin to dance as the twerps look up as Conley's comet passes overhead. They notice the dancing Pokémon and enjoy the sight, and the mysterious princess from earlier arrives to explain what is going on. This is the Comet Dance, danced every ten years by the Ghost Types in memory of the long-dead Conley. But how does this woman know all this? And who is she?

Cryptically, she tells them that she is the one who knows the past and passes it on to the future. She notes the joy of the Pokémon and an excited Ash decides to dance too, joined by Iris and Cilan. They leap around like idiots, filmed by Alexa and watched by the mysterious Princess-lady.

The next day, the twerps sit in the sunlight and happily talk about the dreamlike experience of the previous night. The whole thing had a touch of unreality about it (where were the rest of the island's inhabitants, for instance?), but Alexa has definitive proof of the evening, she filmed it all after all. But when she goes to review the footage, she is horrified to discover nothing but static was recorded. Ash checks his pockets and is alarmed to find the star-badge is missing, but that reminds Alexa at last of where she had seen it before. Looking back through her old book, she discovers a picture of Conley holding the same badge.... and standing alongside the same mysterious princess-lady!

They all gape in shock - who was she? Somebody from the ancient past? A ghost? Some descendent of the original woman and Conley? Perhaps of more interest though - if Conley looks so much like Ash/Ash is so commonly the "chosen one/hero", then who is the "new" version of that woman?
