755: Team Eevee and the Pokémon Rescue Squad!   761: Chimu Ibui Shutsudo seyo! Pokémon Resukyu Tai!    All About Eevee                 The twerps meet a family of not-too-bright volunteer rescuers   Nope   There's nothing wrong with being who you are (unless you suck)

Today finds the twerps heading over a mountain pass, Cilan checking out his map and claiming that Vertress City isn't all that far off. Ash is excited, of course, but so is Iris, who explains that she is looking forward to seeing all the different battles. Given how quickly they got to the Village of the Dragons and then IMMEDIATELY to Opelucid City, and the fact that now they're almost to Vertress City.... it seems the days of long meandering trips between locations are over. Pokémon has decided to shit or get off the pot, and so the twerps turn the corner... and find a large rockfall blocking their continued path.

Oh you dirty motherfuckers

Cilan says they should find a different path around, but Ash and Iris both happily insist that they can just clamber over the rocks. They do so, joined by Pikachu and Axew while Cilan wisely stands back. The rocks shift under their weight, then tumble over the side of the cliff, taking the two children with them as Cilan squawks in horror, seeing the reason he has a regular TV gig falling to his death. As Ash and Iris plummet, an Eevee and a young man come rushing down the side of the cliff alongside of them, the latter calling out an Espeon and having it use Psychic to save the reckless children from gravity's cruel embrace.

Cilan joins Ash and Iris, the three of them apparently lead to a safer way out by the young man and his Espeon and Eevee. The twerps introduce themselves to the man - Virgil - who explains he is from the Pokémon Rescue Squad. What is that? Well it's a squad... for rescuing. There are a number of teams, and theirs is Team Eevee because they have absolutely no sense of imagination.

Ash checks out Eevee and Espeon with his Pokédex, despite meeting many, many variations of them in the past. Eevee's gimmick of course is that it's the town bike of the Pokémon Evolution world, it can evolve into many different Types and Virgil's Team Eevee has 7 different evolutions of Eevee. The twerps want to see them, of course, so Virgil offers to take them back to his house to show them to him (stranger danger!). They go along with him, arriving at the farm/ranch where multiple Bouffalant and Zebstrika are grazing on the open grounds. Virgil explains that his father and brother started up the Rescue Squad and currently work with Officer Jenny, and that he joined them after he returned home from his own Pokémon Journey.

Ash has no idea that you're supposed to eventually FINISH your journey!

Ash wants to see all the Eevees, so Virgil calls them out, and they're all delighted to be out and about in the open sunny sky, even Umbreon! They line up and are checked out by Ash - Flareon, Vaporeon, Jolteon, Umbreon, Glaceon and Leafeon in addition to Espeon and Eevee.

Virgil explains how things got started between him and Eevee way back in the day when he was about Ash's age and on his Pokémon Journey. Overconfident, he'd gotten lost in the forest at night, and just when things seemed hopeless - a Pokémon saved the day like they always do in this screwed up world. Eevee evolved into Umbreon, and shone a light out of its forehead in order to lead them on through the forest. Ever since he has had a special place in his heart for Eevee, and the one that helped save Ash and Iris earlier is the 8th he has trained.

Cilan wants to know why Eevee hasn't evolved yet, and Virgil says she is a little spoiled and still in training. She jumps up into his arms and makes it clear to him that she believes she is ready to evolve now, but he points out that they'll need to decide what form of rescue she'll be best suited for, and what "Eevee-lution" to have. It's all a bit much for an Eevee to have to decide, and he laughs and says they have time to work it all out. But just then a siren sounds, somebody somewhere needs to voluntarily do the work of the police who are paid to do it!

The roof of a barn opens and a small helicopter emerges, an older (but still young) man inside with a Stoutland. It's Virgil's older brother Davy, who yells out to him that he has to head out to an emergency at the dam. Their dad can fill him in on the details, but he refuses to let Virgil come along with him, telling him that he'll just get into trouble. He insists when Virgil promises he won't, and tells him to stick around in case there is another emergency, then heads off in his helicopter.

Inside, the twerps follow Virgil and meet his slightly grizzled father, who is the Jeff Tracy of this Pokémon version of Thunderbirds. He asks who the twerps are and gets a vague,"I met them at the cliff" explanation which he takes at face value. Virgil asks what happened to the dam and learns that a rogue Cryogonal has frozen up the water and surrounding hills of the dam. He tries to make contact via radio but gets nothing but static, it seems they've been cut off by whatever is going on up there.

So what is going on up there? Davy arrives with Stoutland and contacts his dad, learning about the loss of contact with the dam's control center. Davy sends Stoutland to sniff around and figure out what happened, and with a glowing green nose it takes him to the control room where the source of the problem has been found - it's been frozen!

They're not the brightest sparks in the Pokémon Rescue Squad, are they?

He knows that a Fire Pokémon could melt the ice but it would also damage the sensitive equipment inside (and all that ice isn't?), so he calls out his Bisharp and asks it to cut through the icy around the doorway. It does so, clearing the door, and Davy recalls Bisharp and heads inside, finding the dam's workers safe if a little cold, but warning that another of their workers is trapped deeper inside the dam, and they don't know why their emergency power isn't working. Davy assures them he'll sort it out but wants them - the people who know how to operate the damn - to get out of there, so off they go in a rush, heading to the one car they apparently all carpool to work in as Davy finds himself facing off with the rogue Cryogonal. The workers drive away while Davy and Stoutland decide to hide.... IN THE CONTROL ROOM!?!

HOLY SHIT YOU GUYS WILL NEVER FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!

Grizzle-Dad gets the call from Davy not long after - somehow he got stuck inside the control room! Dad says he is gonna come get him. Virgil wants to go instead, but Davy warns him that there is another problem - there is no power and one of the workers is trapped in an elevator. They need to get the emergency power generator up and running, there is a dangerous Cryogonal about, is Virgil up to it? He says he is, it's what he has been training for, and Davy says that he thinks Virgil is ready. Dad agrees, since this life or death situation is obviously the time to throw his son into the deep end and see if he's ready to take on the responsibilities of being an unofficial volunteer rescuer. The twerps want to go along too, and of course Virgil points out that there is no way he can allow that.... and Dad agrees with the twerps that they should be allowed to help out because it is, and I'm quoting Ash here - "awesome."

This is some outfit Dad has going here.

They take the other helicopter to the dam, Iris shivering from the cold. They spot Davy's helicopter and land near it, Virgil letting Davy know on his wrist-phone that they're there. They head to the dam's entrance, melting the ice over the doors with Flareon. The doors are still locked though, so Virgil reminds everybody that Pokémon are basically magic and perfect burglary tools as he has Glaceon and Umbreon use a combo of Icy Wind and Psychic to create a "ice key" that they use to open the door.

That... that makes no sense at all.

Virgil unlocks the door but the ice has rusted it shut, so he calls out Vaporeon to Bubblebeam the rusty areas which... clears the rust away? How does that... wait, what? They head inside, all the Eevees but Umbreon (and Eevee of course) recalled. Umbreon uses its head flashlight to lead them down to the generator equipment in the darkness, but none of the equipment is doing anything, there is no power in the batteries. There's an Eevee for that of course, and Virgil calls out Jolteon to blast the turbines and get some power going. Ash decides to join in too, asking Pikachu to zap away as well. They pour on the power till Virgil tells them to stop, and he tries the equipment again. It works, the generator powering up which should have gotten the elevator working.

Inside the control room, the elevator doors open and the last worker steps out and meets Davy, who at least explains who he is rather than just expecting the worker to know what is going on. The worker explains that he was exploring odd noises in the basement when the power went out and trapped him in the elevator, and he still doesn't know what was causing it.

Virgil and the twerps leave the dam and find themselves face to... thing.... with the Cryogonal, which is kind enough to just float there as Ash checks it out with his Pokédex. The twerps tell Virgil they'll take on the Cryogonal, confidently proclaiming that they'll deal with it while he rescues his brother. Showing the same level of responsibility and calm decision-making as his father, Virgil agrees to leave three kids he met this morning happily clambering over a loose rock pile atop a cliff to save the day.

The Cryogonal - which has been a real sport about doing nothing during this conversation - tries to chase Virgil but is called back by the twerps, Ash bringing out Pignite to do battle. Cryogonal tries to blast Pignite which fires back with Flamethrower, burning it into.... three different Cryogonal!?!

This episode just doesn't give a fuck about bullshitting!

As the twerps fight these three Cryogonal, another two have appeared from nowhere to chase after Virgil as he takes his sweet time getting to the control room. He brings out Flareon to fight them off and it prepares to use Flamethrower. But before it can, Eevee places a paw on its side to get its attention, causing them both to glow with rainbow light.

Eevee is using Helping Hand, increasing the power of Flamethrower and easily dealing with both attacks from the Cryogonal. They try to shift to a close range physical attack but Eevee protects them with, well... Protect! The Cryogonal buzz off of the glowing shield of energy, but then surprise surprise it seems Virgil's decision to leave three kids to deal with a Cryogonal powerful enough to freeze a dam wasn't a great idea!

They come charging down towards him, calling for help as the three Cryogonal follow them, making it five of them against Virgil and the twerps now. Luckily Virgil has him a whole bunch of Eevee-lutions to call on, and he brings out Jolteon, Vaporeon, Umbreon and Glaceon to join Flareon to fight the Cryogonal. They let rip with this attacks, but the Cryogonal pool their strength together for a large Light Screen. It holds up to the first series of attacks but breaks open on the next, and they scatter to create moving targets. Eevee has something in mind though, using Dig and burrowing into the ground.

Meanwhile in the basement, Davy and the worker have arrived in the elevator to find the source of the strange noises. They hear clanking and Stoutland leads the way, bringing them to a trapped Cryogonal that is trying to break free of some pipes it has fallen into. Davy calls out Darmanitan and has it use Super-Power to bend the pipes, allowing Cryogonal to pull free. As it joins them, obviously grateful, the ground is dug up and Eevee arrives, having done hugely expensive damage to the interior workings of the dam in the process.

Outside Virgil is telling the twerps that his Eevee-lutions will clear a space for them to escape and leave him to fight the Cryogonal. They don't like it but he tells them it's okay... but then Davy arrives to tell him to stop. Virgil is surprised, wondering how Davy and Eevee got there (did he even know Eevee was gone? Why is he surprised to see Eevee still there?). Davy explains that they got out through the huge fucking hole in the ground that they're standing right in front of.

Stupidity appears to be a family trait.

The five Cryogonal prepare to attack but Virgil shows the one he freed the other five, and the six are reunited. Davy explains that Cryogonal was trapped and the other five thought it was being held captive, and tried to free it. The six head off through the air, not bothering to help fix up up all the damage and ice they left behind, while Virgil and Davy happily tell them they can rely on the Rescue Squad to help them any time they're in trouble.

The alternative would be to wait for Officer Jenny to do something!

Davy tells Virgil he is impressed with him and considers him a proper member of the Rescue Squad now, and Virgil in turns tells Eevee how impressed he is with her. Her Helping Hand, Protect and Dig were all used without guidance from him, and he believes that this has shown him exactly what kind of Eevee-lution Eevee should be - an Eevee! Yes, Eevee was an integral and helpful part of the team despite not being evolved, and as far as he is concerned she can stay the way she is.

Davy at least knows the work isn't done - the dam is still damaged and needs to be fixed. Using the various Eevee-lutions and Davy's Pokémon, they clear the ice away from everywhere. This includes the Control Room that they apparently weren't able to clear the ice away from earlier because it would damage the equipment!

Return to Rescue Squad Headquarters, Virgil is surprised to hear that Ash is competing in the Unova League, and says this means they'll meet again soon. What does this mean? Davy and Dad explain that Virgil is going to be taking part as well. That journey he mentioned completing? It involved getting his 8 Unova Gym Badges, and he's eligible to enter the Unova League as well.

Cilan thinks this could make for a good rivalry, and Ash of course is delighted to meet another potential rival (at least there will be some people who are more than just names this time!). He heads away with a happy wave to Virgil, who happily waves him away as well. Virgil has good reason to be pleased, because Ash got his ass handed to him by that Cryogonal.

As far as Virgil is concerned, he just met an easy beat!
