685: Ash and Trip's Third Battle!    690: Raibaru Batoru! Baniputchi, Dokkora Sansen!    Ash And Trip Have A Battle. Their Third Battle. Ash And Trip's Third Battle.                 Ash and Iris bump into Ash's rival, Trip. Ash and his rival Trip have a battle, their third in fact. This is their third battle. I hope this is not too subtle.    On a trip somewhere else apparently    Fire always melts ice

Today finds the twerps settled down in forest clearing marked by uneven ground, preparing a meal. Well rather, Cilan is settled and trying to prepare a meal, watched by Pikachu, Axew and Pansage. While he's being responsible, Ash and Iris are whooping it up swinging from vines amongst the branches shouting to Cilan to join them. As they swoop back and forth, leaves drift down and land in Cilan's pot of stew, enraging him since now their shenanigans are upsetting his carefully balanced flavours and tastes. He roars at them to stop (still trying to maintain a smile) and goes a little overboard, tipping over the pot and spilling the stew everywhere. He cries out that it is Emergency Time, the food is ruined and this means it's time for.....

Wait, that doesn't have anything to... oh yeah. Well guess that gives away exactly what happens in the episode!

Cilan is down on his knees, lamenting his spoiled stew like it was the love of his life. Ash and Iris - now on the ground - are apologetic, but Cilan is twitching with his effort to maintain his composure, noting through gritted teeth that now they have no food. Iris insists that this is not the case though, whipping out an apple for each of them, and Cilan sighs that it is fresh, at least. He tells them he will prepare a new meal but maybe they could go and play somewhere else, and they head off chastised. Iris quickly blames Ash, telling him that it is all his fault for being so childish. He demands to know how HE is the childish one, and she tells that swinging from the vines was his idea, and he insists that he just wanted to show she wasn't the only one good at it. She gets competitive immediately, demanding they have a race to see who really is the best, and points into the far distance and says they'll race from the tree of Orin Berries and back. Ash is completely flummoxed, he has no idea what tree she means, and she tells him to look to the right of the really tall tree in the distance. He strains and peers as hard as he can and finally spots it, and is amazed that she can see that far. She tells him that where she comes from, everybody has eyesight as good as hers, and asks him if he is ready to go. Quickly they're off, clambering up the trees and swinging through from vine to vine. Well, Iris does, Ash instantly misses the first vine and hits the ground, rolling downhill.

Elsewhere in the forest, Trip's Vanillite has just frozen a Palpitoad to the ground and Trip is preparing to catch it. Throwing a Pokéball, it.... smashes Ash in the face as he falls through the air! Ash crashes down atop the Palpitoad, shattering the ice holding it in place. Pikachu lands on Ash, and both look up at the confused and staggered Palpitoad which clears its head and rushes away in alarm from them. Ash checks it out with his Pokédex and watches it dive into the water of a nearby lake and disappear, and then a grump,"Hey! Kid!" gets his attention. Looking around he spots Trip and Vanillite, checking the little Ice Cream Pokémon out with his Pokédex and learning that... it's a goddamn ice cream Pokémon!

Trip gives Ash a heads-up that Pokéballs don't catch people, and Ash ignores (or doesn't understand) the insult and tells him sorry for screwing up his capture of the Palpitoad. Iris jumps down, having found Ash, then freaks the fuck out (as does Axew) when Vanillite approaches her. She hugs herself and leans back in alarm, shivering and asking what an Ice-Type is doing there, and Trip mutters that she's a weirdo (Vanillite agrees) before recalling it to its Pokéball. He tells Ash to stay out of his face next time and head away, and Ash says okay (that's it?) and then asks Iris why she is freaking out so much. She explains that Dragon Types are weak against Ice Types and so in general don't like seeing them, and Iris seems to have picked up the same prejudice - even the old Village Elder lady told her she didn't like being around Ice-Types.

Trip overhears her mention coming from the Village of Dragons and returns, getting between her and Ash and starting to take photos of her and Axew! Axew seems eager to get its photo taken but Iris isn't, a fact that Trip acknowledges but dismisses as irrelevant. He tells her she isn't making any sense, Dragon Types are weak against other Dragon Types but Iris isn't scared of Dragon Types as a result. Iris doesn't understand, Ash completely misses the point and tells Trip eagerly that Iris wants to be a Dragon Master (a fact that Iris tries desperately to get Ash to STOP talking about in front the jerk who holds other people and their dreams in disdain). Trip tells her that as far as he is concerned, she is being disrespectful to Ice Types and being scared of them isn't going to help her become a Dragon Master. Iris takes being on the other end of a snarky talking-down-to about as well as you might expect.

Meanwhile Cilan is happily finishing off his stew while Pansage helps set the table. Cilan calls for them to come and get their meal, but they're nowhere to be seen, so Cilan decides to.... keep making food!

Oh Cilan.

Back with Iris and Ash, Trip has asked for a battle... with Iris!?! Ash is shocked and appalled, he wants a battle! Pikachu echoes his anger, but Trip completely ignores him, telling Iris that he has never faced a Dragon Type before and he'd like to see what other Pokémon she has other than Axew. Iris thinks nervously of Emolga and Excadrill and stammers out that she isn't in top form today, disappointing Trip. Ash eagerly insists that he and Trip can battle, and Trip grunts that this wouldn't help his Pokémon at all so why before. He starts heading away, mocking Ash's proclamation of having three badges by pointing out that he has four, saying that he is going to see if he can find Palpitoad again. But now that Iris is safe from having to battle him herself, she smugly mocks Trip for being too scared to take on Ash, what a little kid. Trip pulls up short and agrees to a match, saying it will be a three on three battle. Ash wants a full battle, but Trip says that would just be a waste of time, so Ash eagerly agrees to whatever he can get, claiming that Trip will be shocked at how strong he and his Pokémon have gotten.

Trip calls out Servine to start, and Ash calls out Snivy (oh Ash), Iris moaning,"Oh great, he's relying on spirit!" .....hahaha, everybody knows how retarded Ash is!

Meanwhile, Cilan has finished making up a delicious looking desert... but there is still no sign of Ash and Iris. Dwebble and Pansage have returned from a search with no luck, so Cilan's reaction is... to cook a full-course meal!

Oh Cilan.

Back at the battle, Trip is "shocked" all right, he can't believe Ash's stupidity. As Iris looks on miserably and Ash just looks confused, Trip tells him that Snivy hasn't evolved and while it might have beaten Servine in the past, this won't happen again if he keeps on ignoring basic stuff like this. Ash insists he will do things his way, and Trip tells him that this must be how they do stuff in the boonies, but he won't ever be a Pokémon Master this way and he'll never win the Unova league. Ash smugly replies that the bigger the dream, the better, and Trip tells him that this attitude from Ash will make him beating Ash all the better. Iris sits in the middle looking bored as two boys have a dick-waving contest.

She's not the first girl to have to sit through this, and she won't be the last!

Servine opens with Leaf Tornado and Snivy replies with Leaf Storm - the two moves seem even, but Trip sends Servine in with Cut. Ash tells Snivy to let it get close and use Attract, but Servine blocks it with Leaf Tornado, and Trip tells him that UNLIKE Snivy, his Servine has been levelling up and can block status moves now. Ash insists Snivy has trained hard too, but Trip just smirks and orders another Cut, negating and beating back Snivy's Leaf Blade. Trip tells him that Servine isn't losing to him twice, they've OBVIOUSLY become a lot stronger, far stronger than Ash and Snivy for sure. Iris mutters that she can't really argue with this, while Ash recalls Snivy after thanking it for taking the ass-whipping. It's now 1-0 to Trip, who is surprised that Ash not only wants to continue, but is eager and seems convinced he's going to win this battle. Trip sighs that he isn't going to let Ash drag him down, he has to keep getting better if he wants to face The Champion, and Ash... didn't know there was a Champion!

Iris sighs and says of course there, hasn't he heard of Alder? No he hasn't! She sighs, he's the Champion Master of Unova, everybody dreams of battling him one day. Ash asks if she has ever met him and, looking disbelieving at the stupidity of the question, slowly tells him that no, she hasn't. Has Trip? He has! Was he nice? asks Ash? And Trip snaps at him to find out himself, causing Ash to quietly mumble that he was only asking.

Trip just wants to battle though, grunting that he has to try his best no matter who it is against, that's what Alder told him. He thinks back to the happiest goddamn day of his life when he first saw Alder battle, and we're treated to a flashback of a disturbingly HAPPY Trip staring with joy at a Native-American looking dude with wild red hair and giant black eyebrows. Alder used his Bouffalant (a buffalo looking Pokémon) against an overwhelmed trainer's Herdier, defeating him and shaking his hand. Trip nervously petted Bouffalant and Alder came over and gave him some Pokéfood to feed to it, asking him what he wanted to be when he grew up. Lil' Trip told him that he wanted to battle and defeat Alder so he could be the Champion, and Alder told him he would make sure he remained champion till the day Trip could face him (he has probably made this promise a million goddamn times), leaving Lil' Trip beaming with overwhelming childish glee, and they shook hands on it. Trip comes out of his memory, thinking that to him a win in the Unova League is just a stepping stone to getting to his shot at Alder. Ash has just been staring at him the whole time, unaware of what is going through Trip's head, but now it is time for the battle to continue. Trip calls out his second Pokémon, its Timburr and... ahahahaha..... AHAHAHAHAHAHA! Look at it! AHAHAHA! LOOK AT IT! It looks like a.... what the fuck is that thing? AHAHAHAHAHA!

According to the Pokédex it is the "Muscular Pokémon", and carries around a log of wood which it gradually gets better at holding. When it is able to easily lift the log, it is close to evolving. Ash says he can't wait to challenge the Champion he never heard of before one day, and then sends in Oshawott. It's brave and strong and ready to go... till it spots Timburr brandishing its beam of wood and freaks out, hiding behind Pikachu and trying to send it in instead. Ash tells it that it will be fine and points out that it has its Scalchop, so it zooms in with AquaJet and... crashes into the ground besides Timburr! Trip looks surprised, asking Ash if he is playing around because it is a little difficult to tell. Ash insists this is serious and tells Oshawott to do it again, and once again it zooms all about, flying past Trip who stops battling to start taking photos of Oshawott! Iris is surprised, Ash is infuriated, but Trip shows them what caught his eye... Oshawott has its eyes closed during AquaJet! He tells them that he is amazed it could do AquaJet at all like this, and that this makes Oshawott Special.... in a certain way.

AHAHAHA HE JUST CALLED OSHAWOTT A MONG!

Oshawott is proud though, not getting the subtext, and Iris yells at it that this wasn't a compliment. Trip asks Ash if it is true that he never noticed and Ash admits rather sheepishly that it is, and Trip mutters about a Water Type that can't open its eyes underwater. Ash asks if it is true and Oshawott is rather embarrassed to admit it is, but Ash pets it on the head and compliments it for learning AquaJet anyway and tells it that it'll just need to learn to open its eyes under water. Trip asks if he wants to continue and of course Ash does, so the battle goes on!

Oshawott uses Razor Shell but is distracted by Timburr throwing its beam of wood high into the air. Timburr uses Low Kick to trip Oshawott as it zips by, catches the wood and follows through with Strength to blast away Oshawott's attempted Water Gun. It jumps onto its beam and leaps into the air to Oshawott with Dynamic Punch, who retorts with a Razor Shell, the two moves hit and.....

OSHAWOTT STANDS TALL!

It's 1-1 now, equal between Ash and Trip, the latter of whom seems disgruntled by his defeat by a "special" Pokémon. Ash thanks Oshawott, tells it that they'll work on AquaJet, and brings out Tepig. Trip calls out Vanillite and Iris and Axew freak out over being in its presence, wondering why Trip is doing this if Ash has the type advantage. Trip responds that he is taking a leaf out of Ash's playbook, dealing with Ash's "off the wall" style will make his Pokémon stronger. Tepig comes rushing in with Flame Charge and Trip counters with Ice Beam, causing a huge amount of steam and slowing Tepig down. Ash has Tepig continue to power through though, knocking back Vanillite. Trip isn't done though, having it use Icicle Spear to trouble Tepig.... but Ash isn't done either and comes back with Ember, scoring a direct hit on Vanillite and... not putting it down! Iris tells Vanillite that it is Good Defence, brought about by hard training. Vanillite uses Ice Shard to blast Tepig hard in the face with chunks of ice, and Tepig comes forward with Flame Charge, running right into a Blizzard from Vanillite. Both moves crash, both Pokémon are sent flying back panting hard and then.....

Both fall!

Trip tells Ash that his battle style obviously doesn't suit Trip at all and recalls Vanillite, thanking it for a good job. Tepig is back up on its feet and looking sad, but Ash thanks it for the great effort. Trip looks at his recalled Pokéball and mutters that Alder will just have to wait a little longer, then tells Ash that it is a draw. Ash agrees but says next time he WILL win, and Trip heads off without any parting sarcastic comments. Ash says that he thinks he understands Trip a little better now and he's glad they battled, and Iris points out that now they know why Oshawott's AquaJet always misses. Ash says they'll train hard, and he can't wait to meet Alder.... and what? Destroy Trip's lifelong dream like you've done for so many other people in the past!?!

But with that the episode ends, the camera lifting up to the sky as the narrator says his goodbyes.... and then the camera snaps back as Ash's stomach rumbles and he moans he's so hungry. Iris gasps that they forgot Cilan, and they charge back uphill to return to the clearing and the meal(s!) he has painstakingly prepared for them. Back at the clearing, an oddly satisfied looking Cilan is settled down beside a table laden with delicious looking food, Pansage and Dwebble asleep either side of him, moaning that it's lunchtime.... more like Standing Up The Chef Time!

Welcome to Brockland, Cilan. Population: You.
